@womenpaintersbookclub curates a research-driven reading list exploring the female gaze through art history and theory, feminist theory, women’s biographies, essays, and fiction on love, adultery, eros, sexuality, and power — as if studying a culture: the culture of gendered power structures across time and societies.
This anthropological lens functions as a cross-cultural, diachronic ethnography of the female gaze — not simply about women, but about how humanity organises sight, sexuality, art history and theory, and status through gender. Rather than merely analysing what is said about women, it interrogates how entire systems of meaning-making — visual, literary, and philosophical — operate as rituals of power, and how these may be resisted, subverted, or rewritten.
Female artists were more systematically excluded from the art historical canon in the 20th century than during the Renaissance. This phenomenon is referred to in feminist art history as “the great erasure” — a systematic obliteration of women’s contributions to art in modern times, despite improved access to education and documentation.
Spanning canonical critiques, artist monographs, exhibition catalogues, philosophical texts, interviews with curators and collectors, and global literature, the project dismantles the male canon, challenges male-dominated narratives, and confronts enduring questions of gender and discrimination. 📚
